What is Fascia & Why Does it Need to be Released?

Every muscle and structure is surrounded and penetrated by an interconnected tissue network. The tissue is called fascia. Fascia helps contribute to the structure and functioning of the entire body.

Trauma, inflammatory responses, and surgical procedures create restrictions in our fascia that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain-sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, MRIs, CT scans, etc.) Fascia is rich in nerves which can become compressed, causing additional pain and discomfort.

Myofascial release, a specialized type of manual therapy, can increase range of motion and reduce pain and recovery time and decompress nerves. At East Lake Acupuncture we offer a highly specialized method of myofascial release referred to as ASTR.

Advanced Soft Tissue Release (ASTR), is a manual therapy specialty that is revolutionizing the way patients experience long-term pain relief. ASTR treats pain in a gentle, effective, and natural way by releasing scar tissue, trigger points, and fascia restriction.

What set ASTR apart from other modalities is ASTR’s patented tools, which assist in releasing soft tissue. ASTR clinicians are trained in effective techniques that do not cause additional pain or stress to the patient’s body.

Myofascial release is technique performed by a practioner that specializes in ASTR®. Our own Dr. Jeannette Kerns, AP, DOM, L.Ac. is ASTR® certified, training under the famed physical therapist and ASTR creator, Dr. Joseph Jacobs.
